Bike Day

Friday 28th March was a very busy and exciting day in RO.

We began the morning with a carousel of science activities designed to explore ways of making things move. In Blow Football, the boys made the ball move by blowing into straws. In the Flapping Fish Race, they moved air with card to make the paper fish “swim”. In Shape Rolling they discovered which solid shapes could roll easily and on the Ramps table they tried running different vehicles down ramps at varying heights. This task was varied further by changing the surface of the ramp to alter the level of friction.

The boys loved all these activities and were completely absorbed in them. They made some accurate predictions and came to some thoughtful conclusions e.g. when using the rough ramp, one boy said, “The bumpy bits stick up and the stick up bits stop the car”.

After break, we donned our safety helmets and had a marvellous time riding round the playground on bikes and scooters.024022026025036046

A busy time in RO

We have been very busy in RO lately!

Last Tuesday, we had a visit from Mrs Demetriou and her “PAT” (Pets as Therapy) dog, Cally. We found out that Cally has a very special job, visiting hospitals and care homes where people may be feeling very sad and lonely. Mrs Demetriou told us that older people often like to talk about dogs they had when they were young. We enjoyed her visit very much.

Also on Tuesday, Perform Drama came to school and the boys enjoyed a lively lesson all about the Wild West!

We have been busy making vehicles from construction kits and junk materials as part of our topic on Transport. These models proved to be the spur for some great writing too!

This week, the boys will all have the chance to look under the bonnet of a car to find out what goes on there and we are all tremendously excited about Bike Day this coming Friday 28th March.

In between these events we have all been working hard on writing capital letters M, N, O and also simple rhymes. In Maths we are working on Length, Height and Width as well as number 20.

A Visit From Mr Brar

This morning, we were delighted to welcome Mr Brar into Reception to talk about Vaisakhi, the Sikh New Year festival, which is inĀ April.

It was a fascinating talk for the boys and Reception Staff, who found out all about the 5k’s (do ask your son if he can remember what they are!) and how Sikh families celebrate special festivals.

We are very grateful to Mr Brar for giving up his time to come and talk to us today!

This week in Reception we are learning about number 19 and the different ways we can make it. We will also be learning about measuring and comparing length, height and width.

In our Language lessons, we will cover the formation of capital letters J, K and L as well as continuing to rhyme CVC words.

All week we will be tackling junk modelling, so do please remember us before you visit the re-cycling bin!

World Book Day

We had an amazing time on World Book Day! Our theme was “Courage” and after a very exciting assembly with the Senior Boys, we came back to the classroom to become authors ourselves.

We worked all day long to produce a Class Book about being brave in the face of all kinds of imagined dangers, from sharks in duck ponds to mysterious “ghost schools”, all based on one of our favourite stories, “On my way home”. Very conveniently, this also fits in with our current topic on travel and transport.

The boys were almost unrecognisable in their outfits and all looked fantastic. Even the staff dressed up as Max from “Where the Wild Things Are”, and Mr Brave from the Mr Men series.

At the end of the day we joined the rest of Pre-Prep for a “Show and Tell” assembly to look at all the wonderful books that had been produced during the day. All were based on the same theme and included speech bubbles and other features of comic books.

We are very proud of their work and the books will be displayed in the entrance hall of the theatre for you to look at on Parents’ Evening next Tuesday.
