Fly away butterflies!

It took just two hours for all five of our butterflies to emerge from their chrysalises. By lunchtime on Monday, it was very warm and the sun was trying to come out-perfect conditions for releasing them.

We took the boys out on to the field behind the Music block and unzipped the net. Very slowly, two of the butterflies took flight and we watched as they fluttered into the air. Then we waited, and waited, and waited. The others just didn’t want to leave us, it seemed. On return to the classroom, two were perched on the edge of the net outside and there they stayed for over an hour! Eventually they left us. We hope you enjoy the pictures below.Butterflies released! 004 Butterflies released! 016 Butterflies released! 024

A brand new butterfly!

Over the past week, we have been watching and waiting patiently for our butterflies to emerge from their chrysalises which, as predicted, formed the weekend before last. I felt so bad about leaving them at school for a hot and sunny weekend, that I took them home with me and my family have now been bitten by the “Butterfly Bug!”

Well, nothing had happened this morning, and I was getting worried that the change in temperature or atmosphere might have adversely affected our “babies”. I shouldn’t have worried-the first Painted Lady butterfly emerged with wet and crumpled wings at approximately 9.25 this morning, much to the boys’ delight. Hopefully, I can give you further updates later.

This week, we will be learning about Human Babies, so please send in a photo of your son. An email or hard copy is fine.

We are also learning to join up “ch” and “th” as well as revising correct number formation. Sports Day and Concert rehearsals are keeping us busy too. Have a great week!

Friday 13th!

It has been another busy week in RO. As well as writing about our farm visit and drawing pictures, we have also been modelling clay animals. You can see some of the boys handling the clay below. When they’ve completely dried out (it’s air drying clay that doesn’t need to be fired), the boys will paint and glaze them, ready to be admired on your shelves for many years to come!Week ending Fri 13th June 001 Week ending Fri 13th June 002 Week ending Fri 13th June 004

We’ve also been looking at ordinal numbers this week and the boys enjoyed racing against time with 4 activities and then ranking themselves 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th. They thoroughly enjoyed themselves, as you can see…Week ending Fri 13th June 007 Week ending Fri 13th June 014 Week ending Fri 13th June 015

Two Year 8 boys have joined us this week to help with Maths and Language activities. Today they played a “Yes or “No” game to help with Literacy and also did some spelling with Play Dough!

And finally, I will leave you with this question. Why do caterpillars always weave their cocoons at night time or at the weekend?

Caterpillars!

Oh the excitement! Our pot of caterpillars arrived last Thursday, a little later than expected. They were  tiny and inactive-rather like five discarded eye lashes! Well, after a warm weekend, we have arrived this morning to find they have grown to almost 2cm at full bristly stretch and have made noticeable holes in their food supply. We will enjoy watching them grow this week until  they attach themselves to the underside of the lid in preparation for metamorphosis. Watch this space!

This week we will also be working on “oa”, “ee” and “ie” sounds, writing about our farm visit and revising addition in Maths. We will also be reminding the boys how to read “o’clock” and “half past” times on an analogue clock. Have a good week!caterpillars 002caterpillars 003caterpillars 004

Information for parents

Dear Parents.

Just a few things you will need to know ahead of our Farm Visit this coming Friday.

If you are coming with us on Friday, please make every effort to attend the meeting in RA classroom at 2.50pm tomorrow. If you would like to come along to help, but haven’t already signed up, do let us know first thing on Thursday, as some parents are now unable to come.

Obviously we won’t have time to hear readers on Friday, so we’ve heard all but one of the Red Group today and will catch up with the Blue Group tomorrow.

Similarly, we won’t have time for our Spelling Test on Friday so that will be taken tomorrow (Thursday) morning.

The boys will not need to bring their book bags to school on Friday.

For details of what to bring and wear on Friday, please refer to the original letter you were sent last month.

Please keep an eye on the weather forecast, so that your son is suitably prepared for Friday.

Very best wishes and thanks for all your help and support.
