Autumn 1: week 7

We have come to the end of our first half term and what a wonderful first half term it has been. We hope you enjoyed coming in to see your son’s work on Wednesday and that you agree the boys have worked very hard which is displayed in their tremendous efforts in their workbooks.

We finished our focus on senses by looking at the senses of touch and smell. The boys made their own texture books by selecting materials and  writing adjective labels using their phonic knowledge. They also wrote adjectives when using a ‘feely box’. When exploring our sense of smell the boys smelt four pots and recorded whether they liked the smell and what they thought was hiding in the pots.

In Literacy we we looked at the letters d and g and in Mathematics we introduced numbers 14 and 15 in addition to revisiting previous numbers.

In Expressive Arts and Design we drew our self portraits in our art books which will be continued each year throughout our journey at Lochinver.

Autumn 1: week 6

We have had another great week in reception.

We started our week by looking at our Understanding the World topic of ‘The Senses’ and this week we looked at taste. We listened to the story ‘Pumpkin Soup’ to also relate this to Autumn and Harvest. In response to this we wrote a list of ingredients we would put in our own soups. In relation to taste we also compared sweet and salt popcorn and we used our sense of taste to record which flavour we thought each bowl contained:

In Phonics we revised our next letter sounds and we are continually segmenting and blending to read new words. Our cursive formation has really flourished since the beginning of term.

In maths we began to explore the teen numbers. We introduced the beginnings of place value by learning that 1 in e.g. 13 means 10 and then there are three more ones.

In Expressive Arts and Design we drew some wonderful fruit in relation to Harvest:

Finally we ended our week with a superb Harvest assembly. The reception boys did extremely well as they sat and sang beautifully throughout the performance.

Our star boys for next week are as follows:

Friday: Half term!

The children are thoroughly enjoying ‘junk modelling’ during their explore and learn time, so much so that we are running out of boxes! If you have any rubbish or recycling at home then please bring this into Reception and the boys will enjoy turning it into something! This can consist of boxes, containers or any bits and bobs for arts and crafts. Thank you.

Have a lovely weekend.

Autumn 1: week 4

The children have all done extremely well with their first week of full days in reception.

We have really enjoyed staying for the afternoons as we have taken part in many exciting things, such as our first PE lessons!

On Tuesday the children took part in a ‘Perform’ session. The visiting teacher was amazed with how well Reception Oak did and what they managed to achieve.

In Maths we continued to practise our counting and number formation. In Literacy we wrote about what we could see, in relation to our topic ‘All About me’ and the story ‘Brown Bear Brown Bear What Do You See?’ In Phonics we introduced more letter sounds and continued to practise our cursive handwriting, which you will find in your homework folders. An explanation about homework has been placed on both Reception class windows.
