Have a Happy Easter!

The boys have worked very hard this half term at school and at home. Here are some photos of some recent maths activities completed at home:

The boys have been busy making Easter crafts and something for Mother’s Day. Furthermore, the boys loved taking part in the Easter egg hunt, despite getting rather wet! We were also treated to a visit from Mrs Georgiou and Mrs Koliardos teaching us about a Greek Orthodox Easter. We learnt about the lead up to Easter and the traditions that take place. The boys decorated an Epitath and re-enacted an Easter procession. The boys also tasted some Greek Easter bread and cracked coloured eggs. I’m sure the boys will remember the experience for years to come.

Have an enjoyable and restful Easter. We look forward to seeing you all next term.

Bouncing back

At the start of the week we listened to out next Traditional Tale, ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ The boys cut out and sequenced the story. Afterwards they added fantastic captions for their pictures.

During Maths, the boys were excited to learn about money. They learnt that coins have different values according to their number and colour ranging from bronze to gold. We compared this to the Olympic medals. We visited some ‘shops’, saved up money in piggy banks and played ‘Guess the coins’.

The maths tasks this week is as follows:

Could you please visit a real shop to buy some small items such as sweets that cost less than £1 or 50p. Take a range of coins with you and practise counting in ones, twos and tens. Furthermore, if you have a toy till at home, practise using coins to buy different items. Have fun!

Another group of boys thoroughly enjoyed Welly Time this week:

We also enjoyed a visit from Cally the dog, who helps with stroke rehabilitation. The boys learnt how Cally helps people with their recovery:

On Thursday Pre-Prep experienced some Mindfulness sessions. We became more aware of our five senses and listened to a story of how to be present in the moment and in our thoughts. We look forward to practising what we have learnt.

To end our week we took part in ‘Bounce’. Each boy was involved in three different activities. They had lots of fun whilst also thinking critically, persevering and working as a team.

The starboys for next week are as follows:

Monday: Mateo

Tuesday: Max

Wednesday: Rhys

Thursday: Half day- no star boy

What’s the time Mr Wolf?

This week the boys have enjoyed looking at clocks, especially using their own miniature clocks. They have learnt about o’clock times and events that happen at certain times during the day. They listened to the story ‘What’s the time Mr Wolf?’ and used their clocks to tell the time when the author read the story. We also started to look at half past times. We will revisit time next term.

The maths activity for this week is as follows: Please draw some clocks with numbers 1-12. Please then add a minute hand and a hour hand to display different o’clock times. We have been drawing the hands in class and the boys have learnt that the hour hand is shorter than the minute hand and that both hands need to start from the middle and be drawn in a straight line. As an optional extension, please draw some half past times. Please write the times you made by commenting on this post. Have fun!

On Wednesday half of the class experienced Welly Time for the first time. Even in the rain they had lots of fun! The other half of the class will take part next week.

During Understanding the World, we explored floating and sinking. We considered the factors that determine whether objects float or sink, such as the size and the weight relative to the size, the density and whether the object is hollow/air inside.

Towards the end of the week, reception enjoyed having year 3 visit to read Mr Men books. Each reception boy paired up with a year 3 boy. Together they created their own brand new Mr Men character. Year 3 will come back to visit us soon, once they have written a new Mr Men book.

During Literacy we have continued to listen to a selection of Traditional Tales. This week we listened to ‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff’. The boys enjoyed retelling the story through drama, which helped them remember and sequence the story when writing.

We have started to learn about Easter and have enjoyed some Easter activities:

The starboys for next week are as follows:

Well done to all the boys in RGM!

It is a pleasure to see you all so engaged in learning, boys.  You have been doing super maths work this week.  Whenever I come into your classroom, it is obvious how much you all enjoy learning.  You want to do the best that  you can and keep persevering until you are happy with your work.  Well done!

Halving, Pancakes and World Book Day

At the start of the week the boys learnt about Shrove Tuesday and Lent and why some people celebrate this tradition.

The boys thoroughly enjoying making their own pancakes. They sliced some soft fruits and added a delicious topping. They ate their pancakes for their snack.

During maths the boys have learnt about the concept of halving. They halved shapes and numbers and we also compared this with doubling that we learnt last week.

Maths homework:

Could you please halve some numbers using objects/counters and plates. Choose a number and halve this number across two plates by sharing the objects evenly. In addition, please write an accompanying number sentence. Repeat with different numbers. In class we discovered that even numbers can be halved but odd numbers cannot. To show your halving, please add a comment to this post. Have fun!

Towards the end of the week we celebrated world book day. We had some fabulous costumes and we listened to and learnt a lot about different books including fiction and non-fiction books. It was a very enjoyable day. Here we are in our costumes and listening to an author:
