A sunny week

Reception have had a lovely week enjoying the sunshine. We have been learning how to keep our bodies healthy in this heat and the importance of staying hydrated.

In Maths we revisited place value. We used a die and money to make different totals. We exchanged pennies for higher value coins when we reached new groups of ten e.g. 10 pennies swapped for 10p then two 20p coins and one 10p for 50p.

For the maths activity, please could you play this game at home. Roll the die and lay out the amount of pennies that are shown on the die. Keep rolling and add more pennies. When you have 10 or more pennies, swap this for a 10p coin. Repeat by rolling the die and adding more pennies to the 10p coin you currently have and then substitute this for a 20p coin. Continue to get to 30p by using  20p+10p, 50p and you might even reach £1! You can also use 5p  coins within the game as well. Have fun!

In Phonics, we have been continuing to learn alternate spellings for the digraphs we have currently learnt and their positioning within words, for example ‘oi’ in the middle of words and ‘oy’ at the end of words.

To end our week we enjoyed a fabulous ‘Enviro day’ The boys took part in 6 different activities, including mud art, bug hunts, photography, mini worlds, hairy seed men, leaf collage/crowns, stick creatures, playtime songs and gardening.

The boys have been doing very well practising for their play. They are looking forward to showing it to you on Tuesday 🙂

We also look forward to meeting with you next week for the parent consultations.

The theme for show and tell next week is ‘Transport’. Please bring in an item or picture with some information abut your favourite mode of transport.

Planes and the RAF Museum

We have had another wonderful and busy week in Reception.

For our topic of Transport, we learnt a lot about planes and how they fly. We made our own paper aeroplanes too with some support from our year 8 helpers. The year 8 boys have enjoyed reading a story to the boys every day this week during snack:

Half the class took part in Welly Time, making colour palettes from natural resources. The other half of the class will enjoy this next week:

We had a wonderful end to our week visiting the RAF Museum in Hendon. All of the boys thoroughly enjoyed their visit. They all did ever so well and their excitement was infectious. In the morning they took part in a ‘Teddy’s transport workshop’, where they had to search for symbols and  parts of Teddy’s RAF uniform hidden amongst different forms of transport. Finally, Teddy had a ceremony where he was awarded his medal and the boys got a medal sticker too. Teddy even taught the boys how to salute when they received their medal. In the afternoon we completed a signs and symbols trail and learnt information about several aeroplanes. The boys took it in turns to tick off their aeroplane checklist

Please see below the Maths activity to complete at home this week. Please comment on this blog post to share what you have done at home:

During Maths this week we have been using our fingers and a number line to help us work out the missing numbers.

Can you fill in the missing numbers? Once you have you may want to create your own.

4 + ? = 6

8 + ? = 10

5 + ? = 5

10 + ? = 15

? + 12 = 20

7 – ? = 5

10 – ? = 3

12 – ? = 6

20 – ? = 10

17 – ? = 4

Have a lovely weekend and enjoy the summer fete!

Transport

It has been wonderful to see the boys again after their half term. We can see from your ‘Magic Moment’ stars that your half term breaks were lots of fun and productive.

We have introduced our new topic ‘Transport’. Thank you for sending in questions that you would like to find out the answers to. These will be answered within our ‘Understanding the World’ lessons.

Today we celebrated the Lochinver’s 70th anniversary by taking part in the coin mosaic challenge. Reception worked brilliantly as a team with some excellent help from year 8 boys to make their design. They also celebrated by receiving a biscuit and a balloon.

This week in Maths we have revisited measurement, whilst also incorporating estimating that we learnt the week before half term. The boys estimated different lengths and weights of objects and measured these in pairs and groups. Mrs Perry noted just how well the boys worked as a team.

For the maths activity this week could you please:

Select a number of objects you would like to measure the length of. Then estimate how many hands or feet long you think it will be. Lastly, measure your items using your hands or feet and compare this with your estimation.

Select two objects you would like to measure the weight of. Then estimate which one will be the heaviest or lightest giving reasons why. We have discussed in class that size doesn’t necessarily determine the weight. Lastly, measure the weight of the items by feeling them in your hands or using weighing scales.

In Literacy, the boys revisited writing lists in different formats, consisting of putting one word per line or using commas. In Understanding the World, we learnt about the RAF Museum. The boys are very excited at the prospect of leaving school and travelling to a museum full of aeroplanes! We are looking forward to our trip.

The starboys next week are as follows:

Monday: Mateo

Tuesday: Max

Wednesday: Rhys

Thursday: Rory

Friday: Rufus

Have a wonderful weekend!
