Diwali, textures, science tricks and ‘Wear it Wild’!

The boys have been using their sense of touch this week when making ‘Texture books’. They selected different materials and described how they felt. They did very well applying their phonic knowledge to write labels for their materials e.g. soft, to describe a feather. The boys also sorted objects by texture and they used a ‘feely box’ to feel textures and write labels.

This week we have learnt about Diwali and how it is celebrated. The boys enjoyed making Diva lamps and they also made symmetrical Rangoli patterns. Mrs Mehta taught the boys about Diwali and she showed them Diwali objects and clothing.

On Tuesday we were treated to an amazing ‘science tricks’ show. The boys were fascinated as they watched chemical reactions that looked like magic. The scientist explained to the boys how all of the ‘tricks’ worked and they learnt about different chemical reactions.

Here are the boys in their costumes and building animal dens during wear it wild day:

What can you taste?

This week during ‘Understanding the World’, the boys have been exploring their sense of taste. They learnt about their tastebuds and that different parts of the tongue taste different flavours. They took part in a popcorn tasting experiment to test their sense of taste. Using four numbered pots, the boys tasted and guessed whether the popcorn was sweet or salt flavoured. They then learnt how to tick their choice in a table. The boys are also doing very well at lunchtime, trying lots of new food.

During Expressive Arts and Design, the boys have been busy making their Leafmen, inspired by the story ‘Leafman’. We hope you like looking at them in the window!

During Maths we have been continuing to practise writing our numbers.

For the maths homework activity this week could you please complete the following game:

Lay out your number cards facing downwards. Turn one over and draw that number of objects and/or practise writing the number. Continue until you have turned over all numbers. Please comment on this blog post to say how you got on completing this game. You can do this by clicking on the heart on the left hand side of this post.

On Wednesday afternoon we were very lucky to receive a visit from the award winning author Rob Biddulph. The boys were mesmerorised as they listened to Rob read and they watched him draw his illustrations. Rob described ‘Kevin’ the main character from one of his books and the boys drew Kevin based upon Rob’s excellent descriptions. Mr Walker even drew his own Kevin and we all compared our own versions of Kevin.

Polar Bear, Polar Bear, what do you hear?

This week we have explored our sense of hearing. The boys listened to the story ‘Polar Bear, Polar Bear, what do you hear?’. Afterwards they listened for sounds that they could hear in their classroom and wrote these in their literacy books. Furthermore, the boys enjoyed playing listening games where they distinguished between different animal sounds:

During Literacy, Phonics and Maths, the boys have been showing excellent perseverance and are all progressing very well with their cursive letter formation and number formation.

Each week we will be setting maths activities and homework tasks for you to complete at home. Please see this weeks activity below:

In your zip wallet please find your number card, next lay the numbers out, pick a card and then count out a matching number of objects. You can use any kind of objects, e.g. beads, counters, leaves, toys. Have fun and let us know how you get on by commenting on this blog post. To comment, please click on the ‘heart’ at the side of this blog post.

Recently, the boys have noticed how many leaves have fallen. They listened to a story called ‘Leafman’ featuring is a man shaped from leaves! Leafman gets blown from place to place and meets several other leaf animals. The boys were excited to go on an autumn walk to collect leaves and possibly find Leafman! Next week they will be using the leaves they collected to make their own Leafmen:

At the end of the week, Reception learnt about how they can be Pre-Prep ‘Super learners’, which incorporate our five core school values of: Perseverance, Curiosity, Honesty, Respect and Organisation and Independence. The boys were shown the mascots for each core value, e.g. Terry the Tortoise who shows perseverance. They are all very enthused to be ‘Super Leaners’!

Here are some other things the boys enjoyed during ‘Explore and Learn’ time:
