Spring 2: week 1

A very warm welcome back to you all.  We hope you had an enjoyable and restful half term.

This week in Mathematics,  the boys have been looking at measuring using non-standard units of measurement such as cubes. They began by making predictions and estimations. The boys compared different lengths and heights and have used associated vocabulary. Furthermore, we investigated another type of measuring by using the weighing scales. They compared the weights of items and used the language of ‘heavier’, ‘lighter’ or ‘the same as’.

In Literacy we have started our new Topic of Traditional Tales. We looked at ‘The Jolly Postman’, which contains several letters to traditional tale characters from other characters. In response to this, the boys have written letters to the three bears pretending to be Goldilocks apologising for making a mess in their cottage. All the boys are writing with confidence and they structured some excellent letters.

In Expressive Arts and Design the boys made a collage of a postbox in relation to the story. During Computing, the boys enjoyed using the ‘Bee-Bots’. They programmed the devices to move around the room in different directions:

We were very pleased to welcome back Perform Drama this week for another Workshop. The theme was Global Warming and the children acted as superheroes to help save the Earth from global warming. The message throughout was ‘Reduce, Re-use, Recycle’ to help maintain our planet.

What a lovely week we have had to end this half term. On Monday we celebrated the start of the Chinese New Year. We learnt lots of information about China and Chinese New Year traditions. In Literacy we wrote about what we had learnt. We also looked at traditional Dragon Dances and the boys performed their own version:

The boys listened to the Chinese New Year story and they re-enacted this:

Furthermore, in Expressive Arts and Design we made our own Chinese lanterns:

Aside from writing about the Chinese New Year, we also practised structuring sentences:

On Tuesday we celebrated Shrove Tuesday. The boys helped make the batter and they mixed it until it was the right consistency:

In Mathematics we applied our knowledge of subtraction to ‘take away’ using money. We visited a role play shop and we found out how much change the shop keeper needed to give by counting back to find the answer:

In Music we explored playing with instruments. The boys also took it in turns to be ‘conductors’.

Spring 1: W/B: 01.02.16

This week during Understanding the World we looked at The Sun. We learnt about the heat and light it produces and what that means for our planet. Furthermore, we looked at shadows and how they change throughout different times of the day. The boys made shadow puppets and they enjoyed experimenting with the shadows that they produced.

In Mathematics we learnt about the concept of subtraction and other terms we use for this such as ‘taking away’ and ‘less than’. We completed sums by using our fingers or counting back. Some number sentences were there to trick us such as 5-0=5!

In Literacy we wrote instructions for packing a suitcase for a hot destination and all the boys wrote informative instructions. We have continued to look at sentence structure and the importance of reading over our work to check it makes sense. In Phonics, we have been consolidating the letter sounds we have learnt so far and our tricky words.

Here are some other things we got up to this week:IMG_0209[1]IMG_0210[1]IMG_0211[1]
