Kipper’s weather

This week we listened to different Kipper stories by Mick Inkpen. All of these books had a weather theme and Reception wrote about what Kipper would do in their chosen weather e.g. When it is raining, Kipper would splash in puddles. The boys structured some excellent sentences and their bravery towards their independent spelling is wonderful to see. The boys working on the independent activities used play dough to make different types of weather and wrote accompanying captions.

We have been busy making a display for the library all about Mick Inkpen’s kipper books. In relation to the story ‘The blue balloon’, the boys have made a paper mache rainbow and blue balloon. They had great fun getting messy!

During Understanding the World, the boys learnt about solids and liquids and how they change in different temperatures. We melted ice in class, which caused much fascination.

During maths we consolidated both addition and subtraction from the last couple of weeks.

Please find below the maths activity to complete at home, which combines the activity using the die from the previous weeks:

Roll a die and count the number of spots on the die. Next, roll the die again. You can choose to either add or take away the numbers. Try alternating between each concept to help with understanding and recognition of different operational signs. To extend this further, place any number above 10 in your head. You need to remember to ‘lock’ this in your head. Next, roll the die and whatever number is shown on the die, please place on your fingers. Lastly, count on or back from the number that you put in your head on each finger e.g. 16-3, put 16 in your head and get 3 fingers to count back on.

Have fun!

Here are some other things we got up to:

A pictogram of our favourite weather

We have a new theme for show and tell next week, titled ‘weather’. For this, please bring in some information you have researched about weather to share in class. The star boys for next week are as follows:

Monday: Zach

Tuesday: Alex Lee

Wednesday: Alex Sembi

Thursday: Arhan

Friday: Arthur

The animals went in two by two

Our current topic is weather and within Literacy, we looked at the story of Noah’s Ark. The boys re wrote the story and drew some wonderful pictures.

The boys have been working very hard creating weather artwork, including making rainbows, clouds and sewing rain drops onto binka. They will be displayed in our classroom:

During maths the boys have been impressing us with their subtracting. Next week we will consolidate addition and subtraction in the same week to enable  the boys to become used to interpreting different number sentences by counting on or back within the same lesson.

In Understanding the World, the boys listened to how rainbows are made and how puddles disappear.

Please find below the subtraction activity to complete at home this week. Please write your answers in the comments box.

Roll a 1-6 die, count the number of spots on the die and remember this number. Next, roll the die again. If the number is smaller than the first then subtract that number (using your fingers) and write a number sentence. If the second number is bigger then the first, then swap the numbers around. To extend this further, place any number above 10 in your head. You need to remember to ‘lock’ this in your head. Next, roll the die and whatever number is shown on the die, please place on your fingers. Lastly, count back from the number that you put in your head on each finger e.g. start with 15 in your head and count back 14, 12, 13 etc on your fingers.

The starboys for next week are as follows:

Monday: Rhys

Tuesday: Rory

Wednesday: Rufus

Thursday: Sahil

Friday: Udodi

Have a lovely weekend!

A full and frosty week

At the beginning of the week, we introduced our new topic of ‘Weather’. We listened to the story ‘The Wind Blew’. Reception re-wrote this story, which we turned into a class book for our book corner.

In Maths we focused on addition. We practised writing our number sentences, using the add and equals operational signs. Please find below the addition activity to complete at home this week:

Roll a 1-6 die, count the number of spots on the die and place this number on your fingers. Next add 1, 2, 3 or 4 to that number using your remaining fingers. Finally, record your findings as a number sentence. To extend this further, place a number between 10-19 in your head. You need to remember to ‘lock’ this in your head and then add a single digit number by counting on using your fingers.

To show what you have done for this short homework task, please comment in the comment box by clicking on the heart on the left hand side of this post. Well done to Louis for your comment on the last maths task.

During Art and Physical Development, the boys enjoyed making kites. In addition, the boys sewed some raindrops using binka. Mrs MacNeill would like to express just how amazed she was at how RGM completed this task. Please watch the video below of one of the sewing groups:

What a treat for the boys to have a bit of snow and ice to end the week. Reception thoroughly enjoyed exploring our outside area:

A warm welcome back!

Happy New Year! A warm welcome back to you all. It has been wonderful seeing all the boys again. We hope you have had an enjoyable and restful Christmas break. The boys immediately settled back into our class and school routines.

In Literacy, the boys wrote 3 wishes and hopes for the New Year. Some examples the boys thought of were: eating more vegetables, being kind to siblings and friends, working hard and helping others at home and school.

Yesterday in Maths, we learnt about ordinal numbers and how these are represented e.g. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and so on.

We have continued our phonic sessions, including our continuous revision of the letters and digraphs we learnt before Christmas.

Here are some other things we got up to:

Our theme for show and tell is ‘Our Holidays’. For this, please bring in a photograph of your family on Christmas day or something you did during the Christmas holidays.

Tuesday: Arthur

Wednesday: Charlie

Thursday: Demi

Have a super weekend!
