Have a lovely half term!

A big well done to RS for a fantastic first half term. They have made lots of new friends and have worked very hard.

This week during Literacy, the boys have been persevering with their cursive letter formation and writing labels or captions.

During Maths we looked at 10 and 11. We have been exploring our fingers and making different addition combinations within 10. We have revisited writing numbers 0-9.

We have enjoyed talking about our plans for half term and we have been reflecting on everything we have achieved this half term.

The next group of boys enjoyed their welly time session, going on a ‘Bear Hunt’:

Our topic after half term is ‘Houses and Homes’. We discussed our houses and the people that we live with. We wrote the names of our family members and drew them in our houses.

Here are some other things we got up to this week:

The theme for show and tell after half term is ‘Houses and Homes’. Please bring in a picture of your favourite space in your home. The starboys after half term are as follows:

Monday: Half term

Tuesday: Aarnav

Wednesday: Albert

Thursday: Blake

Friday: Chrisjan

The weekly challenge for the first week back is:

Zip up your coat

We hope you have a well deserved, restful and enjoyable half term!

Our senses: touch and smell

To start our week, we listened to the story ‘Leafman’. We went on an autumn walk looking for leaves. The boys eagerly searched for Leafman in piles of leaves. We found him but he quickly blew away…

We created our own Leafman pictures with the leaves we collected. We hope you like looking at them on our class window.

We enjoyed more time outside, when half of the class went to ‘Welly time’. The boys went on a bear hunt, inspired by the story. They made bear pictures and a ‘cave’. The other half of the class are excited to go next Wednesday:

During ‘Understanding the world’, we have looked at our next two senses: touch and smell. The boys have been using their sense of touch when making ‘Texture books’. They selected different materials and described how they felt. They did very well applying their phonic knowledge to write labels for their materials e.g. soft, to describe a feather. They also sorted objects by texture into sorting hoops and used a ‘feely box’ to feel textures and write labels.

Later in the week, the boys took part in a smelling experiment. They smelt 4 numbered pots, with hidden contents. They ticked the box to match the scents:

We have been making good progress with our cursive letters:

cursive letter formation boards

This week in maths we have looked at numbers 8 and 9. For the homework activity this week, could you please practise writing 5-9, particularly 8 and 9.

The weekly challenge for next week is:

Put your book and book bag in the box.

The starboys for next week are as follows:

Monday: Noah

Tuesday: Reiss

Wednesday: Sebastian F

Thursday: Sebastian S

Friday: Half term

Have a lovely weekend!

Tasting

This week during ‘Understanding the World’, the boys have been exploring their sense of taste. The boys learnt about their taste buds and that different parts of the tongue taste different flavours. We had a popcorn tasting experiment to test our sense of taste. Using four numbered pots, the boys tasted and guessed whether the popcorn was sweet or salt flavoured. They then learnt how to tick their choice using a table chart.

RS are doing very with their tasting at lunchtime, they are trying lots of new foods or trying those they are less sure of.

During Expressive Arts and Design, the boys have been decorating picture frames to take home next week.

During Maths we have been continuing to practise writing our numbers, particularly 6 and 7.

For the maths homework activity this week could you please complete the following activity:

Lay out your laminated number cards facing downwards. Turn one over and draw that number of objects and/or practise writing the number. Continue until you have turned over all numbers. Please comment on this blog post to say how you got on. You can do this by clicking on the heart on the left hand side of this post. Have fun!

The boys have been enjoying their outside ‘Explore and Learn’ time. On Thursday they visited the music field and made pictures and structures using leaves:

For show and tell next week the starboys are as follows:

Monday: Jacob

Tuesday: Joseph

Wednesday: Kailen

Thursday: Kiaan

Friday: Nathaniel

The weekly challenge for next week is:

Pour your own drink.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Polar Bear, Polar Bear, what do you hear?

We have had a busy and fun filled week in Reception!

The boys started off their week having their school photographs taken. They all looked very smart indeed.

During Phonics, we have continued to learn new letter sounds and their cursive formation. We are getting the hang of the ‘lead in strokes’ and lots of progress is being made.

During maths we have been practising our counting, with the help from ‘Muddles’ the puppet. We have been learning how to form numbers 4 and 5. For maths homework this week, could you please practise writing numbers 4 and 5, remembering to start at the top, with the number sitting on the line. Have fun!

On Tuesday the boys were treated to a playground games workshop. They played skipping games using a large skipping rope including escaping the ‘crocodile’ and the ‘snake’. The boys also practised skipping using their own skipping ropes. Lastly, they worked in threes using an stretchy band to play ‘banana split’ and ‘the penguin shuffle’.

During Understanding the World, we have continued to investigate our senses. This week we looked at hearing. We listened to the story ‘Polar bear, Polar Bear, what do you hear?” The boys listened for sounds in our classroom and they wrote the initial letter sound and any remaining letter sounds. We looked at a model of an ear, learnt about different animal’s ears and played an animal sound game.

During Expressive Arts and Design, we drew observational drawings of fruit and vegetables in our art books using oil pastels.

During our outside ‘Explore and Learn’ time, the boys enjoyed planting bulbs, which we hope to see next year.

At the end of the week, the boys were treated to a story from Mr Walker. Each week either Mr Walker or Mr Donoghue comes to read a story to Reception.

The star boys for next week are as follows:

Monday: Drake

Tuesday: Ethan

Wednesday: Harvey

Thursday: Hugo K

Friday: Hugo S

The weekly challenge for next week across both Reception classes is: Put your hand up on the carpet.

The boys have been doing well  working towards achieving this already.

Have a great weekend!
