Learning about our sense of sight

This week during ‘Understanding the World’ we learnt about a sense of sight. The boys listened to the story ‘Brown Bear, Brown Bear, what do you see?” After spotting all the animals in the story, we looked for items we could see in our classroom. The boys then wrote the initial letter e.g. d for ‘duck’. They also wrote any remaining sounds they could hear when segmenting and blending.

We enjoyed learning about the our eyes and we looked at a large model of the eye. We practised closing our eyes and listening to instructions. By not being able to see, we learnt that we need our others senses to help us if our sight is impaired.

During art, the boys created a collage of the yellow duck from the story:

Maths homework activity:

The boys have been doing very well learning how to write their numbers. They have learnt that all numbers start at the top and they are trying hard to make them sit on the line. For homework, please can you practise writing numbers 0-3. Please let us know how you get on by commenting on this blog post. To do this, please click on the ‘heart’ to the left of this post. You can also bring in independent work from home, which we can display on our ‘independence wall’. Have fun!

Next week, the boys will be receiving their first reading books.

Also starting next week is our Star Boy rota. The theme is ‘All about me’. Please bring in something to show about your favourite toy or hobby. The list is displayed on our class window. The Star Boys for next week are as follows:

Monday: Aarav

Tuesday: Alistair

Wednesday: Antonio

Thursday: Christian

Friday: Danveer

The weekly challenge is: Put on your coat independently.

Please help your son by practising putting their coat on independently, including fixing their sleeves if they are inside out.

Have a restful and enjoyable weekend!

Settling into Reception

We have had a super second week in Reception. This week, the boys went to their first PE lessons. Mr Barth and Mrs Kerry were very impressed with the boys’ listening and enthusiasm.

On Tuesday and Wednesday the boys had their first music lessons. The boys were singing name songs and learning the names of percussion instruments. They also listened to the composer Henry Purcell.

At the beginning of the week we continued to learn each other’s names. When sitting in a circle, the boys clapped the number of syllables in each others names. We then categorised our names by their initial letter sounds. We discovered that names beginning with ‘A’ were the most common in RS. After this, the boys practised writing their name leaning how to use the cursive script and decorated the edge of their name card.

On Thursday the boys went to their first computing lesson in the computing suite. They practised their mouse control and played simple puzzle games.

Today Reception were visited my Mr Walker, who read them a story. Each week Mr Donohoe or Mr Walker will read a story to Reception on Friday afternoons.

The boys have begun their phonic lessons and have thoroughly enjoyed learning the songs and actions for the letter sounds introduced so far. It has been great to see the fantastic work the boys have completed at home too. They are beginning to get the hang of the cursive ‘lead in strokes’.

In Maths we have started to practise forming our numbers, remembering that every number starts from the top.

In relation to our topic ‘ourselves’, we have begun to look at our five senses.

Here are some other things we got up to during child initiated learning time (explore and learn time):

We look forward to seeing the boys next week. We hope you all have a lovely weekend.

Welcome to RS’ Blog

A warm welcome to you and your sons. This is RS’ class blog, which is updated every Friday.

It has been wonderful welcoming all the boys to school and seeing them learn their new daily routines. They have been busily exploring and playing in their new classroom and making new friendships. The boys have enjoyed painting self portraits and balloons as well as completing other small tasks:

We have been playing name games to learn each others names and we have played board games and puzzles to learn how to use them:

Today we used the ipads exploring ‘All About Me’ activities, which is our topic this half term:

We look forward to a full week next week, including new lessons in our classroom and specialist lessons with our specialist teachers.

Have a lovely weekend!
