Summer 1: W/B: 23.05.16

We have come to our final week of this half term. The boys are doing ever so well in all areas of their school life.

In Maths this week we practised addition and subtraction. The boys completed number sentences using both mathematical concepts. They did very well switching between the two.

We also revisited 2D and 3D shapes. The boys named and described the properties of these shapes.

In our Literacy lessons, the boys used their imaginations to write their own stories. They displayed their creativity through their use of characters, settings and plots.

In Understanding the World we have completed our Bean Diaries. The boys have really enjoyed watching their plants grow and we hope they will continue to do so at home.

In relation to our theme of growing, during Literacy the boys wrote their own Newspaper reports about the Rocket Seeds Lochinver House has received. They included many facts and information about their arrival and growth.

In Mathematics we focused on Money, by adding and subtracting coins .The boys enjoyed visiting a role-play shop to add coins together and also receive their change. In addition, the boys revised the concept of ‘Sharing’. They predicted which numbers were odd or even and shared objects equally to discover if it was an even number. They also attempted sharing odd numbers to discover they could not be halved equally. Furthermore, the boys also practised estimating different amounts of objects, which they did with good accuracy. They checked their amount by counting.

Summer 1: W/B: 9.5.16

We began our week writing about our weekend news. The boys are really progressing in their independent writing.

In our other Literacy sessions we read the story of ‘The Enormous Turnip’. The boys enjoyed the repetition of this story and they included this repetitive language when retelling the story. They included a twist at the end by writing a continuation of the story with their own character who finally helped pull out the turnip!

In Mathematics we focused on time looking o’clock and half past times using analogue and digital clocks. We also revisited money by looking at coins in circulation. We will continue to explore money next week when we look at addition and subtraction.

In our Understanding the World session, the boys examined their broad bean plants. They updated their bean diaries writing about all the parts of their plant that have currently grown. Furthermore, the boys labelled parts of a plant and they drew and painted their own plants.

Summer 1 W/B: 2.5.16

We have had a lovely week as always, but even more so due to the sunshine!

In Maths this week we learnt about symmetry and matching patterns. The boys really enjoyed all the activities and it definitely made us think!

In Literacy we read the story Titch by Pat Hutchins. We discussed that even though Titch is small he can do great things just like all of us in reception. We sequenced the story and we wrote about what we enjoyed.

We have continued to write our weekly entries into our bean diaries. We are all very pleased that our beans have germinated. The boys are monitoring and watering the plants to help them grow.

The boys are doing very well with their weekly spelling tests. If your son has not already shown you, please take a look at the their writing in the back of their spelling books.

On Thursday morning, we were very grateful to have the opportunity to visit the space seeds in the laboratory. The boys showed exemplary behaviour and they were even allowed to climb up and peer over to look at the seeds, what a treat.
