The Snow Dragon

This week, Pre Prep were treated to a ‘Tall Stories’ production of ‘The Snow Dragon’. The boys watched in awe as the story of Billy the Goat unfolded where he learnt the lesson of kindness to receive a visit from the Snow Dragon:

During Literacy, we wrote letters to Father Christmas. The boys beautifully listed some items they are hoping to get. These have been sent to Father Christmas and we are hoping to receive a reply…

During phonics the boys have been learning about Digraphs (two letters that make one sound). They have also been reading questions and answering them by writing either ‘yes’, or ‘no’:

This week in maths the boys have enjoyed some Christmas addition, adding presents together using Santa’s sack. They have been doing very well adding using their fingers and remembering how to write number sentences. We have also been looking at 2D shapes this week. The boys enjoyed playing the ‘Shape Feely Bag’ game, where they described the properties of the shapes to their friends telling them how many edges and corners the shapes have.

The maths homework activity this week is as follows:

Go on a shape hunt around your home or out and about. Please see if you can find the following  shapes and comment on the blog post if you find them:

Circle

Square

Rectangle

Triangle

Hexagon

Pentagon

When you have found the shapes, count the corners and sides.

Good luck shape hunting!

]During ‘Explore and Learn’ time, the boys have been enjoying using Santa’s workshop:

Preparing for winter…

We began our week thinking about our ‘dream homes’. The boys thought of imaginative ideas such as ‘chocolate house’, ‘slide house’ or a ‘gold house’. They described the features of their houses and used their phonic knowledge to write a list of words. A collection of their work and pictures have been put on display:

During Computing, the boys enjoyed using ‘simple city’, where they made their own buildings.

In Understanding the World, we learnt about different homes around the world and how these have to be adapted for different climates. We also listened to the story of ‘The Three Little Pigs’ and we made our own houses to use during Explore and Learn time.

We have been investigating the seasonal changes and starting to prepare for Christmas. Our role play area has begun to transform into Santa’s workshop! Next week the boys will be able to enjoy dressing up as different Christmas characters. They will write cards and make Christmas items in the workshop.

During Maths we have continued to practise forming our numbers and learn about addition. This week we focused on numbers 13 and 14. As part of this, we incorporated our class sizes and the names of the boys in each class to add boys together to make our number sentences.

The maths activity this week is a continuation from last week, please practise the sums below, using your fingers. Please leave a comment on this blog post to tell us how you got on.

Houses and Homes

We began our week looking at our new topic ‘Houses and Homes’. We looked at different types of homes and compared these with our own. The boys completed some excellent booklets drawing and writing the names of their family.

This week during phonics, the boys have been mastering writing letters with cursive ‘loops’, particularly ‘f’ and ‘j’. They should all be proud of the progress they are making.

During maths, the boys have been looking at two digit numbers. They have been learning that the first digit represents one ten and the second digit shows the extra ‘ones’. They have enjoyed exploring this with cubes and numicon shapes.

We have been using our fingers to solve addition number sentences. Please use your fingers to solve these sums and comment your answers on this blog post:

During Expressive Arts and Design, the boys drew self-portraits in their new art books. They were encouraged to consider all of their features and where these are positioned on their heads:

On Thursday afternoons, the boys have been enjoying visiting different outdoor areas around our school with RGB. This week they played with bats and balls:

Today, Reception attended the whole school Remembrance assembly. Prior to this, they learnt about why we celebrate Remembrance day and why it is significant. The boys sat beautifully and stood for a minutes silence.

Here are some other things the boys got up to during ‘Busy Fingers’ and Explore and Learn’ time:

Halloween and Bonfire night

It was been wonderful to welcome the boys back from half term.

We began our week celebrating Halloween. The boys took part in some ‘spooky maths’. We have been learning about adding numbers and we did this by adding objects together in a ‘Witches cauldron’. We have started to learn how to record our findings using number sentences using the + and = operational signs.

For the maths challenge this week, please choose two numbers to add together that equal up to 10. To complete this, please use objects and your fingers to help you. Please comment on this blog post to let us know how you got on.

During ‘Understanding the World’, we learnt about our last sense, our sense of smell. Using 5 numbered pots, the boys used their sense of smell to work out what was in each pot. They then recorded their answers within a table. The most popular smells were mint and crisps!

The boys were very interested to learn about Bonfire night and why we celebrate it. They have enjoyed creating colourful fireworks pictures.

At the end of the week, the boys attended a Happy Puzzle workshop. They had to work as teams to complete the puzzles, which required them to use problem solving and reasoning.

Here are some of the boys having lots of fun making a “show” outside, using the instruments and dressing up clothes:

The star boys for next week are as follows:

Monday: Nathaniel

Tuesday: Rishaan

Wednesday: Riyan

Thursday: Seb

Friday: Shayan

Have a lovely weekend, enjoy the fireworks!
