Advent

This week, the boys have been excited to open the first bauble on the class Advent calendar, which has helped them learn ordinal numbers. The boy from the previous day reveals the face hiding behind the next bauble.

During Phonics, the boys learnt the digraphs ‘sh’, ‘ch’ and ‘th’ this week. We were busy writing words and sentences with both these sounds.

In Maths, the boys continued to explore 2D shapes. We named and identified the properties of a square, triangle, rectangle and triangle.

Letters to Santa

During Literacy, we wrote letters to Father Christmas. The boys sounded out and listed some items they are hoping to get. These have been photocopied for our role play area. We used our maps to walk to the postbox to post our letters to Santa. We are hoping to receive a reply from Father Christmas soon…

In Maths, we look at recognising and identifying the properties of 2D shapes.

For the Maths activity this week, can you go on a shape hunt? What shapes can you find? How many sides does the shape have? How many corners? Do you know the name of the shape?

During Welly Time, the boys enjoyed using natural materials to make a stickman.

Anti- Bullying week

This week we celebrated Anti- Bullying week by wearing odd socks to celebrate being different. The boys also enjoyed eating their breakfast together.

During Phonics, the boys have been learning the sounds ‘j’, ‘w’ and ‘v’. They have been using their phonic knowledge to write words with these sounds and some boys have been challenging themselves to write simple sentences.

This week we have looked at making number bonds to 5 using cubes.

Here are some games you can play at home:

Set up five skittles outside and ask knock them down by rolling a ball. How many have fallen over? How many are left standing?

Use 5 counters/cubes/objects, how many different ways can you split them into 2 groups?

Can you use a sentence to explain, e.g. “3 and 2 make 5”

During Art, the boys designed their own houses using paper bags and painted our diva lamps.

During cooking, the boys made jam sandwiches!

There will be no Show and Tell next week.

Remembrance Day

During Literacy, the boys made a home booklet. They used their phonic knowledge to sound out words and write a list of who lives in their home.

In Maths, the boys have been looking at one more and one less of a given number to 10. Some boys challenged themselves to find one more and one less of a given number to 20.

The Maths challenge this week:

Peg a numeral onto the washing line. Can you find the numeral that is 1 more and peg it next to it? Can you find the numeral that is 1 less?

This week in cooking, the boys made sparklers using breadsticks, chocolate and sprinkles. The boys had a wonderful time!

During Art, the boys have been developing their drawing technique by drawing poppies for Remembrance Day.

During Forest School, the boys had fun using a bug catcher to collect insects. They also enjoyed creating story plots in the mud kitchen.

We were fortunate to have a parent speak to us about Diwali. The boys enjoyed finding out about the festival of lights. The boys enjoyed making their own diya lamps using clay.

Houses and Homes

For our topic, ‘House and Homes’ the boys learnt about the materials our houses are built out of and looked at different houses from around the world such as, Kenya, Switzerland, and Australia. They enjoyed building their own houses out of bricks, straw, and wood.

In Phonics, the boys learnt the sounds ‘d’, ‘g’, ‘o’ and ‘u’. They thought of words beginning with both sounds and practised blending with these sounds too! Please practise writing your sounds in the Home School Notebook.

During Maths, the boys were learning to use language related to time and sequence events. They sequenced how they wash their hands, their weekend day and days of the week through songs. We also discussed day and night routines.

For the Math’s activity, please can you draw a picture of something you do in the morning and something you do in the evening? I would like to challenge you by labelling your drawing using your phonic knowledge. You are welcome to bring in your pictures and show us!

In Art, we made fireworks using different coloured paints and glitter!

The boys enjoyed decorating their biscuits for Halloween.
