Have a lovely half term!

It is hard to believe another half term has flown by and next half term will be the final term in Reception for our boys. The boys have worked incredibly hard this half term and we are very proud of them!

In Literacy, we wrote a list for our Platinum Jubilee pudding. The boys thought of tasty ingredients to go in their pudding.

In Maths, we have been learning to recognise 3D shapes such as a, cube, cuboid, cylinder, sphere and pyramid. The boys were challenged to recall the properties of these shapes.

Over the half term, please go on a shape hunt! See if you can find real life examples of: Cubes Spheres Cuboids Cylinders and Cones. Once you have found the different shapes, please count the corners and edges and identify the faces. Happy shape hunting!

During Welly Time, the boys loved exploring the natural environment. They have been particularly interested in minibeasts and decided to go on a minibeast hunt. The boys had so much fun!

The boys really enjoyed celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. The boys collected many coins and bottle tops for their coin mosaic creation. We were so impressed with the amount collected!

Water Play

This week in Maths, we have been focusing on 2D shapes. We looked at different shapes such as a square, rectangle, triangle, pentagon and hexagon. The boys were particularly interested in the shapes, trapezium and a rhombus! They did a great job describing the properties of each shape.

For the Maths activity this week, have a go at these shape games:

During Understanding the World, we talked about the changes that happen when we grow and completed a ‘growing’ sheet.

During Welly Time, the boys enjoyed water play in the sunshine. They had a go at using our very own water wall!

In Literacy, we have been observing our broad bean plants and updating our broad bean diaries.

Lovely parents from RY class talked to the boys about Australia. We found out lots of interesting facts!

Planting

We started the week with a lovely breakfast together to mark Mental Health week. We discussed how we can overcome feeling lonely.

We have been carefully watering our broad bean seeds! The boys have been very patient and excited about seeing their beans grow. They have written in their Bean Diaries and have worked together to sequence and label the life cycle of a butterfly.

In Maths, we have been looking at capacity. The boys were able to use the language, ‘full’, ‘half full’, and empty to describe an amount in a container.

The Maths activity this week: Please could you find 3 containers, e.g. bottles, cups, jugs. Fill one so it is ‘full’, one so it is ‘empty’ and one ‘half full’ or ‘half empty’.

Now try: ‘nearly full’ and ‘nearly empty’.

We had a visit from the dentist. She talked to the boys about keeping our teeth healthy. She gave the boys egg timers to ensure they brush their teeth for two minutes everyday!

A parent from RG spoke to the boys about Eid and Ramadan.

During Literacy, we listened to the story, ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ and made our own caterpillar diary. We wrote what the hungry caterpillar ate each day and the caterpillar turning into a beautiful butterfly.

The theme for Show and Tell is Songs. Please bring in a song to sing to the class. The Show and Tell boys next week are:

Monday: Daniel

Tuesday: Edmund

Wednesday: Frederick

We hope you have a lovely weekend.

Measuring!

In Maths this week, we used a ruler to measure many objects. The boys did a great job using their rulers to measure accurately.

For the Maths homework this week, find three toys, can you find the longest? Shortest? How do you know? As an extra challenge, can you use a ruler or non- standard units (cubes) to measure items around your house. You can draw the object and write the measurement next to it.

During Welly Time, the boys enjoyed collecting a variety of naturistic items from outside such as, sticks, rocks, pinecones, and leaves. The boys then used sticks and string to hang their items. Their lovely nature mobiles are displayed in the classroom.

This week, the boys held the chicks! They were very gentle when handling them.

During Literacy, the boys listened to the story, Titch by Pat Hutchins. The boys were brilliant at retelling the key events in the story and writing sentences about the story.

The theme for Show and Tell is Songs. Please bring in a song to sing to the class.
