Have a wonderful half term!

A big well done to RS for a fantastic first half term. The boys have all made lots of new friends and have worked very hard.

During Maths we looked at 10 and 11. We have been exploring our fingers and making different combinations to 10. We have revisited writing numbers 0-9. To celebrate Diwali, the boys learnt about symmetry and they coloured symmetrical Rangoli patterns:

For the Maths homework activity, could you please explore symmetrical patterns using the link below:

The next group of boys enjoyed their welly time session when they went on a ‘Bear Hunt’:

Mrs Mehta told the boys about Diwali and she showed Diwali decorations. The boys enjoyed making their own Diwali Diva lamps:

Welly time

This week half of the class went to ‘Welly time’. The boys went on a bear hunt, inspired by the story. They made bear pictures using natural materials and they reenacted the story. The other half of the class are excited to go next Wednesday:

During ‘Understanding the world’, we have looked at our next two senses: touch and smell. The boys have been using their sense of touch when making ‘Texture books’. They selected different materials and described how they felt. They did very well applying their phonic knowledge to write labels for their materials e.g. soft, to describe a feather. They also sorted objects by texture into sorting hoops and used a ‘feely box’ to feel textures and write labels.

Later in the week, the boys took part in a smelling experiment. They smelt 4 numbered pots, with hidden contents. They ticked the box to match the scents:

Here are some other things the boys got up to during Explore and Learn time:

This week in Maths we have looked at numbers 8 and 9. For the homework activity this week, could you please practise writing 5-9, particularly 8 and 9.

The weekly challenge for next week is:

Put your book and book bag in the box.

Popcorn and Leafmen

This week during ‘Understanding the World’, the boys have been exploring their sense of taste. The boys learnt about their taste buds and that different parts of the tongue taste different flavours. We had a popcorn tasting experiment to test our sense of taste. Using four numbered pots, the boys tasted and guessed whether the popcorn was sweet or salt flavoured. They then learnt how to tick their choice using a table chart.

RS are doing very with their tasting at lunchtime, they are trying new foods and eating their food very well.

During Expressive Arts and Design, the boys created Leaf men pictures using the leaves they collected. Their pictures were inspired by the story ‘Leafman’. We hope you like them on the classroom windows!

During Maths we have been continuing to practise counting and writing our numbers, particularly 6 and 7.

For the Maths homework activity this week could you please complete the following activity:

Lay out your laminated number cards facing downwards. Turn one over and draw that number of objects and/or practise writing the number. Continue until you have turned over all numbers. Please comment on this blog post to say how you got on. You can do this by clicking on the heart on the left hand side of this post. Have fun!

The boys have been enjoying their outside ‘Explore and Learn’ time. On Thursday they visited the music field and they found worms and millipedes.

Polar Polar Bear, What Do you Hear?

During Understanding the World, we have continued to investigate our senses. This week we looked at hearing. We listened to the story ‘Polar bear, Polar Bear, what do you hear?” The boys then listened for sounds in our classroom and they wrote the initial letter sound for what they could hear and any remaining letter sounds. Furthermore, we looked at a model of an ear, learnt about different animal’s ears and we played an animal sound game.

During Phonics, the boys have continued to learn new letter sounds and the cursive formation for each letter. They are getting the hang of the ‘lead in strokes’ and they are beginning to apply this when writing their names as well.

During Maths, the boys have been practising their counting and number formation. With the help from ‘Freddie the Frog’ (one of our Super Learner characters), they have been learning how to form numbers 4 and 5. For the Maths homework activity this week, could you please practise writing numbers 4 and 5, remembering to start at the top, with the number sitting on the line. Have fun! You can comment on this blog post to let us know how you get on by clicking on the ‘heart’ to the left of the post.

The boys learnt about Harvest and how fruit, vegetables and crops are harvested. During Expressive Arts and Design, they drew observational drawings of fruit and vegetables in their art books using crayons.

Here are some other things the boys got up to:

Collecting autumn leaves and making a leaf garland

The star boys for next week are as follows:

Tuesday: Feyi

Wednesday: Jacob

The weekly challenge for next week across both Reception classes is: Put your hand up on the carpet.

The boys have been doing well working towards achieving this already.

Have a great weekend!
