It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…

This week our classroom has started to look ‘Christmassy’. Our role play area has changed into Santa’s workshop and we have been completing Christmas crafts. During Literacy, we wrote letters to Father Christmas. The boys sounded and out and  listed beautifully some items they are hoping to get. These have been photocopied for our role play area and they have been sent to Father Christmas in the North Pole. We are hoping to receive a reply from Father Christmas soon…

Christmas crafts, which involved painting feet-we had some ticklish feet!

The boys have also been busy performing excellently during the recording of Pre Prep’s Christmas play.

During phonics the boys have started to learn about digraphs (two letters that make one sound). In Maths the boys have enjoyed some Christmas addition, adding presents together using Santa’s sack. They have been doing very well adding using objects and their fingers and learning the + and = symbols.

For Maths homework this week, please can you make your own teen numbers, cut them out and then use your teen numbers in your book bag to play pairs. To play, spread your cards out, face down and take it in turns to turn over 2 number cards and if they match then keep the pair. The winner is the person with the most pairs at the end. Have fun!

House and Homes

During Show and Tell, the boys have enjoyed sharing pictures of their favourite spaces in their homes. For our topic of ‘Houses and Homes’ the boys listened to the story of ‘The Three Little Pigs’ and we made class pigs houses to play with at our small world area:

During Literacy the boys created their own ‘Dream homes’ e.g. sweets house, chocolate house, slide house etc. They thought of the features in their house and they sounded out their words to hear the letter sounds to write a list of features for their houses.

During Maths we focused on numbers 14 and 15. The boys have also been ordering numbers to 20 and finding more and less than given numbers.

For the Maths homework activity, could you please practise using the language of ‘more’ and ‘less’. Please start by spreading out your laminated number cards. Then select one card and try and find one more than that number. Repeat for a few numbers. Next, do the same, but this time find one less. For an extra challenge please find 2,3,4 or 5 more or less than your chosen number. You can refer to a number line to help you and also use your fingers to count on or back.

Here are some of the things the boys got up to during explore and learn time:

For Show and Tell, please bring in a picture of your favourite space in your house. The Starboys for next week are as follows:

Each week we take photographs of the boys for their online tapestry journals displaying their learning and progress. Sharing this with your son and looking at the photos and comments is a lovely way to celebrate their achievements. There is also the option to ‘comment’ on the photos.

Welcome back!

It has been lovely to welcome you all back after a well deserved half term.

This week we have been learning about Bonfire night. The boys learnt the history of these celebrations and listened to stories.

In Expressive Arts and Design, they enjoyed making fireworks pictures using paint glitter and also cutting out rockets:

In Maths the boys learnt about numbers 11 and 12. They have been learning about ‘teen numbers’ and that numbers beyond 10 start with number 1 and this represents 10.  We have been partitioning numbers beyond 10 and seeing how many extra ones need to be added to 10.

For the Maths homework this week, could you please use numbers 11 and 12. Pick a card, count out ten objects of your choice and see how many more you need to make the chosen number. You can also draw the objects. Have fun! As an extra challenge you can write an accompanying number sentence, e.g. 10+2=12.Please comment on this blog post by clicking the ‘heart’ on the left hand side to say how you got on.
